Thank You BARCS Volunteers!

BARCS Volunteers and Staff Work Hard For The Animals
Throughout the Worst Winter on Record!

The dedicated and caring volunteers and staff at BARCS worked diligently throughout the recent snowstorms to make sure the shelter dogs were walked before and after the unprecedented storms. Thanks to our volunteers, we were able to ensure that someone was at the shelter every day to care for the animals and to administer medications. Several people made their way to BARCS to help dig out the sidewalks, parking lots, and dog walking areas so that the dogs could be walked and the shelter could re-open to the public.Thank you Volunteers & Staff!

Efforts on behalf of the animals began on Friday, February 5th when nine volunteers responded to our urgent appeal to come to the shelter to make sure that all of the shelter dogs were walked before the storm.

On Saturday, February 6th, two employees – Jennifer Crosson and Brian George – trudged through knee deep snow and in the middle of the blizzard to make sure the shelter animals were cared for.  Brian walked over 5 miles round trip to get to the shelter.  And three volunteers – Marie Gleason, Terry Kleeman, and Jean Sommers – drove to the shelter to administer medications to the shelter animals.

Volunteers responded immediately after the storm to help clear the sidewalks so the dogs could be walked.  With assistance from Denise Smallman and Mark Levinson, Susan and Larry Lidard brought a snow blower to the shelter and assisted with clearing the walkways.  Drew Sandberg showed up to dig out the dog exercise yards.

With a second storm approaching, Veterinary Technician Melissa Costello brought blankets to the shelter and slept at BARCS for two nights to ensure that veterinary care was available for the shelter animals.  She said it was “fun.”  She made hot cocoa and used the opportunity to do some web surfing that she is unable to do at home.

And on Thursday and Friday after the storm another crew of dedicated volunteers showed up with snow shovels and blowers, enabling the shelter to re-open on Saturday, February 13th.  It was quite a grand re-opening:  32 dogs and cats were adopted over the weekend!

The BARCS Board of Directors is honoring the volunteers and staff who helped out with a "Blizzard Thank You Lunch" at the shelter catered by Zella’s Pizzeria
