Please help BARCS save this amazing dog’s life.  Russ, a Catahoula Shepherd mix, arrived at BARCS with 2 broken elbows.  Despite his leg pain, he never hesitates to give kisses freely to those near him.  At first he could barely walk, yet he scooted onto our shelter veterinarian’s lap to cuddle with her.  He loves belly rubs and kisses and is good with other dogs.  Our entire staff has fallen in love with him and so will you.

Unfortunately Russ’ condition requires an orthopedic specialist to repair both elbow fractures.  The cost of this surgery will require special fundraising.  The staff and volunteers who have met him are trying to raise the funds on their own to make this happen.  Fortunately, Dr. Peter Lotsikas at Veterinary Orthopedic Sports Medicine Group in Ellicott City has agreed to donate his time to evaluate and perform surgery on Russ.  However, even with the services donated, the surgery cost will still be expensive.  Now, with the BARCS Franky Fund, you can help animals that are severely injured - like Russ - and give them the medical attention they need, so they can go on to live a happy, healthy life.

We have a foster home set up to care for Russ after the surgery.  We are keeping him at the shelter on daily pain medication in hopes that we can raise enough money for his surgery.  He will “sit pretty” in a begging stance for his meds, which just melts our hearts.   Now all we need are the funds to afford his surgery.  Please help us raise these funds to give Russ a second chance at life.  Donate online here at this special "Franky Fund" page.  If you are interested in adopting this special dog, please email us.  On behalf of Russ and everyone at BARCS, thank you!

Pet Pictures with Santa Claws!

Christmas came a little early this year for BARCS!  Supporters lined up to get their picture taken with Santa to help raise funds for the Franky Fund.  Two fundraisers were held on November 22nd in Riverside Park and December 6th in Federal Hill Park, raising nearly $2,000 for BARCS!  A special thanks to Sally Ann Jennings, Tamara Granger, and "Santa" who runs the OhMiDog.com blog for putting the fundraisers together.  Below are Taz (a BARCS adoptee) and Gretta (left) and Cooper (right), who was adopted from BARCS in 2005.

Happening this month at BARCS

In order to reach out into the community and continue to find lifelong homes for pets, BARCS participates in various adoption outreach events around Baltimore.  "Meet & Greets" help to showcase some of BARCS' wonderful animals and help the community learn more about our shelter.

Also visit BARCS the first Saturday of every month for the low-cost Rabies Clinic & Microchipping.  Here's an ongoing link to all BARCS events.  Email Frank Branchini if you would like BARCS to appear at your event or business.

Charitable Gifts From Your IRA

Big news! Current legislation allows donors to make charitable gifts from their IRA accounts to qualified organizations such as BARCS during tax years 2008 and 2009 without incurring income tax on the withdrawal. As with all planned gifts, we recommend that you talk with your IRA trustee or tax advisor to ensure this opportunity is appropriate for your personal financial and philanthropic situation.  For further details, please email us.

BARCS is Blessed!

Students from St. Casimir's Catholic School
in Canton collected items for BARCS!

Last month, BARCS volunteer Kristina Hocking saw an email indicating that BARCS needed some supplies (our "Wish List").  She immediately thought of  contacting fellow parents at her daughter's school to collect donations for BARCS.  With the help of Principal Melanie Conley and the students at St. Casimir Catholic School in Canton, they pulled together toys, treats, sheets, towels and many more items for BARCS.  BARCS is very grateful for donations like these and the outpouring of help from the community of Baltimore.  Thanks to Kristina and St. Casimir's for thinking of BARCS!

Volunteers Needed for Animal Disaster Planning

BCART

After Hurricane Katrina, animal lovers nationwide learned that our government wasn't fully prepared or equipped to care for our companion animals or livestock in times of disaster.  This devastation resulted in the demand for animal emergency preparedness plans.  The Humane Society of the United States answered this call by creating the National Disaster Animal Response Team which further encouraged states and counties nationwide to establish their own animal response teams" State Animal Response Teams (SARTs) and County Animal Response Teams (CARTs).

Baltimore City is looking for volunteers to assist with formation of a City Animal Response Team.  Volunteers will be trained in animal emergency preparedness and response.  The Baltimore CART (BCART) volunteers will respond to disasters and emergencies in the city by assisting with the rescue and care of animals that are in danger.

The difference that can be made and the value that will be added by those who are willing to help is immeasurable.  In her reference to the BCART, Baltimore City Health Department Assistant Commissioner Olivia Farrow states: "We hope that citizens will come forward to volunteer for this important effort that will contribute to saving animal lives during natural disasters or other emergencies."

For information about SART and CART, please visit www.sartusa.org.  For details about how you can get involved with the Baltimore City Animal Response Team, contact Alexis Mitchell at BaltimoreCART@gmail.com.
