Local Vets Offer Services to BARCS

Each year BARCS receives hundreds of animals that are seriously sick or injured and in need of urgent medical attention.  In response, BARCS created the “Franky Fund.”  This fund allows BARCS to send sick and injured animals to local veterinary hospitals so that their condition can be better diagnosed and proper medical treatment can be provided.

Several local veterinary hospitals participate in our Franky Fund program. These veterinarians have been very supportive of BARCS.  They work with BARCS by accepting injured animals and treating them at discounted costs, of which the Franky Fund pays for.  Many of the vet hospitals and their staff end up falling in love with the animals they treat and often foster them or help them find new homes.

As a result of the generosity from these warm hearted vets, BARCS is able to treat hundreds of animals and best of all – give them new hope and get them adopted!

The veterinarians and hospitals play a vital role in saving lives of Baltimore City’s homeless pets and we would like to thank them for the care they have provided and for their continued support.  The hospitals that help BARCS include: Everhart Veterinary Hospital, Doc Side Veterinary Medical Center, Animal Dental Center at the Pet ER, Maryland Veterinary Surgical Services, and Academy Animal Hospital.

Winky Needs a Home!

Winky is a beautiful 8-week old kitten that came to BARCS with a severe injury to her eye.  She was sent to Everhart Animal Hospital where it was determined that her eye could not be saved.

Winky is a happy kitten that is not at all affected by the loss of her eye.  She is as playful as ever and is learning quickly that she has to turn her head to get a better view of the world!  She is currently recovering at BARCS and is available for adoption.  Please email us if you are interested in adopting Winky!

Happy Tail!

BARCS often receives letters from people who have adopted from our shelter.  We love to hear about BARCS alumni.  If you have a "Happy Tail" to share in our newsletter or online, please send us a note along with a photo of your pet.  Below is a recent "Happy Tail" we received from Vanessa Dallatezza and her new friend Daisy.

Daisy enjoys her new digs at
Sing-A-Rama in Federal Hill

Dear BARCS,

Recently, I opened Sign-A-Rama in Federal Hill.  Realizing how pet friendly this wonderful area is, I contemplated getting a “shop cat” shortly after I opened.  However, I thought I better let the dust settle,  so to speak.

In the interim, I had heard about BARCS and now that I was their “neighbor,” I wanted to visit them to see if there was anything that I could do to help.  After leaving the shop early one day, I stopped by BARCS and was given a tour by Debby [Rahl].  It quickly became obvious how passionate BARCS and their many volunteers are about their animal friends.  I again contemplated getting a cat.  Finally, on another visit to BARCS, I noticed the cats in cages near the front desk.  I almost didn’t want to go look at them because I knew I’d probably be leaving with one if I did.  Well, when I saw the sleepy Calico, “Aura," and read the paper stating she had been there since April (almost 3 months), I couldn’t help myself.  We decided to adopt her.  That’s when I found out that Aura (now Daisy) had been hit by a car and had spent her recovery wandering around the BARCS offices.

Daisy has been the perfect addition to our shop.  She is friendly, sweet and loves the attention that she receives from us and our clients.  Each day when Daisy greets us I think of how lucky we are to have her and what her fate would have been without the wonderful people at BARCS!

Kind regards,

Vanessa Dallatezza
