Record Number of Adoptions at
BARCS!
Last month,
BARCS asked Baltimore area
residents to consider giving a "Gift of Life"
for the holidays by adopting shelter animals. The promotion helped to
raise awareness about the number of animals being surrendered to BARCS. It
ran from Dec. 15-31 and offered reduced fees for adoption. The response from the
community was overwhelming: 409 animals were adopted
from the shelter in December! This is the largest number of
monthly adoptions in the history of the Baltimore City animal shelter! The
previous monthly record was set in November with 217 adoptions.
As we look back at 2008, we here at BARCS are so thankful for
the support of the community in helping us care for homeless animals.
We hope this record-breaking trend continues in 2009. Thank you Baltimore!
New Year, New Hope for the
Animals

Consider adoption
as a resolution! The New
Year brings resolutions filled with new
hopes and wishes for new beginnings.
How about making your resolution the
adoption option?
Resolving this year to adopt a pet from an
animal shelter is a unique way to help
fulfill many of the usual resolutions.
You can trade those "bad" habits for
beneficial ones, including exercise and
spending more time with your family.
Animal companionship is a proven stress
reducer and health enhancer. Pets
teach us so much about living in the moment
and enjoying life to its fullest.
Adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue
group is a win-win situation. It
saves lives, saves money, and
rewards the adopter with a lifelong,
dedicated friend. It also opens up a
space so another animal can be saved.
Please consider saving a lonely animal and
treat yourself to a fulfilling relationship

Weather Tips for Pets
|

|
Don't forget to
keep your pets safe from the winter woes!
BARCS and the Humane Society of the United
States has a list of tips to help you and
your pets in the colder weather:
- When the temperature falls below 20
degrees Fahrenheit, it's best to keep your
pet indoors. Short-haired dogs, cats and
puppies should be kept indoors when the
temperature dips below 40 degrees
Fahrenheit.
- Check
your garage and driveway for antifreeze.
Antifreeze tastes sweet to pets, but is
poisonous if consumed. Should your pet
ingest any amount of antifreeze, contact
your veterinarian immediately.
- Use a
damp towel to wipe your pet's feet and
underside after going outside. Ice-melting
chemicals can irritate and burn the pads of
your pet's feet and can cause serious injury
if ingested.
- Keep
snow from piling high next to your fences. A
packed snowdrift will provide a boost and
make it easy for your dog to escape the
confines of your safe yard.
