A Waggin' Good Time!

BARCS would like to thank everyone who helped to make the 5th Annual BARCStoberfest fundraiser a huge success!

More than a thousand people came out to support BARCS' biggest fundraiser of the year on October 25th, helping to raise over $50,000 that will directly benefit the 12,000 homeless animals we receive each year. It was a true community event that drew folks from around the Baltimore area, including Mayor Sheila Dixon, who kicked off the Strut Your Mutt Walk, and City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

Participants enjoyed pet contests, including the wildly popular Pet Costume contest, pet blessings, a fly ball course, silent auction, local artists, pet related vendors, obedience and pet health information, microchipping, and meeting local animal rescues.

Top Dog!
Congratulations to the top Strut Your Mutt winner, Kim Gurski (pictured on the right with her dog Casper).  Kim won a Dell Laptop Computer valued at $500! Other top earners can be found on our main BARCStoberfest page. Many thanks to Kim and  everyone who made BARCStoberfest a success!

BARCS Happy Tail!

BARCS often receives letters from people who have adopted from our shelter.  We love to hear about BARCS alumni.  If you have a "Happy Tail" to share in our newsletter or online, please send us a note along with a photo of your pet.  Below is a recent "Happy Tail" about a former BARCS adoptable.

Liberty, a three-year old Blue Nose Pit Bull, came to BARCS on June 23rd as an expectant stray mother. BARCS was very overcrowded at that time and the shelter staff was very worried about what would become of her. A BARCS employee offered to foster Liberty and brought her home.  Two weeks later, she delivered a litter of nine healthy pups. She was a loving mom that took great care of her pups for the next ten weeks. After her pups were weaned and adopted, Liberty's foster mom started the search to find her a new home. A few weeks ago, Liberty appeared on the BARCS Facebook page as the "adoptable pet of the day!" Within a few hours of her post, a fan of BARCS Facebook page - Dennis Porter - responded that he was interested in adopting her.  Here is Dennis' story in his own words:

...I had a close friend who had a rescue Pit named Stella, and I became very attached to her because she was just a big ball of love with a lot of personality. If I had not known her, I would have not considered that breed of dog. When I saw Liberty, (now called Libby) my gut just told me that she would be perfect. She certainly is. We go for walks three times a day and she lays at my desk sleeping most of the day. She doesn't like hardwood floors or stairs, and when encountered with them she freezes up, it is very funny. She is excitable when she sees squirrels and cats. She is great with other dogs and both adults and children. She is truly a gentle giant! I am so happy to have her, and we are going on a trip for Thanksgiving, and she loves riding in the car. I can't say enough wonderful things about her! Also, I would like to thank BARCS for all of their hard work and the great program they have. More people should consider adopting. There are so many great animals at the shelter!  She is a true gift!

BARCS Gives Thanks!

BARCS would like to thank Ashley Lemmon, who generously collected donations for the shelter animals of BARCS, as part of her Bat Mitzvah celebration.  Ashley loves animals and she personally came down to BARCS to drop off the many wonderful supplies and toys.

If you would like to make BARCS your charity-of-choice at your next event or gathering, please let us know.  We are always in need of food, supplies, and toys for the 12,000 animals we take in each year.  Visit our "Wish List" to find out more.

Thank You Ashley!
