Update on Dog Abuse Case

BARCS is seeking information about a dog who was abused on Easter Sunday. The Baltimore Bureau of Animal Control received a call about youths throwing rocks and bricks at a dog who was tied up in the 3700 block of Greenspring Avenue near the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School.  When a concerned citizen went to rescue the dog, the youths began throwing rocks and bricks at him.  The suspects appeared to be 12 or 13 years old.

The one-year old dog (now named Christy, pictured) was brought to BARCS where she is being treated for severe injuries.  She was found to have several wounds on the top of her head, her snout was very swollen with multiple wounds, there were a number of  wounds in both nostrils, hemorrhages in both eyes, a wound on the dorsal surface of her front paw, and crusted blood in booth ears, both nostrils, and in her eyes.  Read more about Christy and her story here.

If you would like to help Christy and other animals like her, please donate to BARCS Franky Fund.

April Adoption Special!

As the warmer weather arrives, more kittens are being born and the number of dogs running at-large increases. BARCS and other animal shelters become inundated with animals.  As we anticipate these increases in the number of animals arriving at our shelter, we are hoping to make room in our shelter by placing more of the animals currently awaiting adoption.

Throughout the month of April, BARCS is celebrating Spring with adoption specials.  We are WAIVING the $65 adoption fee for selected shelter animals who will be identified in the shelter with paper flowers.  People adopting these animals will receive a beautiful potted plant (while supplies last).  Read more about our April Adoption Special here.

Pet Project

The BARCS Staff was truly touched when a group of second grade students from Southwest Baltimore Charter School came by to drop off a HUGE donation to our shelter!  Last month, the students raised $456 through a penny drive at their school.  They visited BARCS, met with our staff, and sang a special song dedicated to BARCS and our animals.

BARCS would like to send a big “Thank You” to the 2nd grade students at Southwest Baltimore Charter School!

Happy Tail!

BARCS often receives letters from people who have adopted from our shelter.  We love to hear about BARCS alumni!  If you have a "Happy Tail" to share in our newsletter or online, please send us a note along with a photo of your pet.  Below is a recent "Happy Tail" about Frankie and his new adoptive parents Alexandra & Carson:

Hello, I adopted a pit mix from BARCS last September.  His name at the time was Norman, but we changed it to Frankie because of his blue eyes!  He was seized from an abusive home by Baltimore City Animal Control and was at BARCS for a few weeks. I adopted him on my birthday!

In the beginning he was totally nervous, but now he is the most amazing dog.  He loves to play and loves his mommy.  Frankie would prefer to be on the bed cuddling more than anywhere else. I work at a pet store, so he has everything he could ever ask for and he gets to hang out there all the time.  He loves going to the park to play with the other dogs. He is still a little nervous around new people and loud noises, but in general is doing great. He even gained about ten pounds of muscle, so he isn't so skinny!

I included some before and after pictures of him. He grew back a ton of hair that he lost being chained outside and has a nice soft coat now! Frankie is so happy now and we are so glad we got him!  Thank you BARCS!
